The Importance of Remembering

by cbuckner
Earlier this month DLythberg pointed out how easy it is for us as Believers to forget what God has done for us. It is a continual cycle where we fall on our faces and beg for God’s help, get the blessing, and shortly after we are on our way and back to ignoring God and forgetting about how He has blessed us. Remembering what God has done for us is something that HE takes very seriously; so ser... [continue]

"Now the 2nd generation of Israelites are complaining like the first, even after the lord granted them victory over the Canaanites. "Why," they cried to Moses, "have you brought us out of Egypt to die in the desert?" How short-sighted they were, like many of us today---forgetting the victory the Lord has accomplished in our lives, only to have us grumble and complain again. But this time God sent snakes into the camp and bit many an Israelite. yet it was only then when they saw the error of their ways, and how they's sinned against God.
Here. we see perhaps the first OT look at salvation by faith:

he told Moses to make a bronze snake, and put it on a pole, so that many who are bitten can look up and not die.

Here also is an example of how God chastizes us, yet immediately delivers His people."

"God has a set way of doing things. this we need to acknowledge. As much freedom as the Lord allows us, we need to obey Him to the tee. Moses was frustrated with the complaining Israelites---understandably so---for they'd been in his ear night and day able never leaving Egypt and the "luxuries" they had there. Now they were thirsty and complaining about dying of thirst in the desert. So God accomodates them by telling Moses to speak to the rock and water will flow from it; but God's servant had had enough! He was fed up with their constant bickering, so what does he do? Instead of following the Lord's command completely, he gives his own interpretation of what God said: he hit the rock twice, full of anger at these ungrateful people. And though water did flow from it, he was guilty of disobedience. Frankly, I'd probably have done the same thing. Nonetheless, it was a violation of His holiness---therefore, because of these complaining people (and his own neglience), Moses and Aaron would NOT bring His people into the Promised Land. Aint no half-steppin' when it comes to God."

You're right, God will still use you, though you've disobeyed him. And, like you said, people end up thinking that their "pseudo-obedient" way is alright. It makes for lax in following God's commands, and we tend to water-down God's way. And yet He'll still work things out. For instance, Samson disobeyed but God's purpose was fulfilled. Saul lost access to God, yet God did mighty things through his hands. And the same could be said for us...

POSTED BY: cbuckner

Great Word. What's interesting to me is that God didn't allow Moses' lack of attention to detail to prevent His provision from reaching the people. Moses was punished as a result, but the people still got the water they needed. Sometimes doing things the wrong way may appear to work, but rest assured when God gets you alone again to speak to you, if you didn't follow God's pattern He's going to address it. Sometimes people will use the fact that their methods worked as pseudo-proof that their methods were right. But, as seen here the fact of right and wrong methods are handled often privately between God and His servants.

Forgetting what the Lord has done for us, and still demanding more? in this passage, God had not only brought the children of israel out of Egypt, but also given them the bread from heaven---manna---to sustain them. but now they were bored of the manna, and had forgotten all about their safe passage out of slavery. now they wanted to complain (sounds like church people, me included). thinking back to the way things used to be, in their sin. it was too much for Moses to bear. He ordained seventy elders to share the load, and to deal, a lot easier with the people's complaints. But this time, God had enough. Though He'd given them the meat they insisted upon, His anger was such that He burned them up, even before the meat could be swallowed! this speaks to me especially, ecause many times I forget what the Lord brought me out of, only to demand even MORE from Him. We must be content with what God has given us and, though He loves to give us more, we can't take Him for grated, as if He's some kind of genie..."

What a great thing it was, for all these families to work together. If anyone ever had a doubt about the concept of tithes and offerings, I think they should look at this passage. Of course, back then, it wasn't all about money and recognition. they gave what was required of them They gave unto the Lord. It's funny how things have changed in the Church today, through the centuries. What happened to the concept of the Offering? Why does it always have to be money? cannot we give an offering of our time, and our fellowship, and our lives. Somehow things have gotten twisted."

According to God's command, they are to be laid upon the Table in two rows of six, representing the Tribes. But is there a difference between it and the Showbread? Are they the same? Yeah, you're right. It means the same thing. What threw me off was the fact that it was used all of a sudden, out of nowhere, in Exodus---but it was used only once. I guess what confused me was the way it was supposed to be set on the Table, in two rows of six, representing the twelve tribes. For some reason, i had in my mind that the Showbread was like these two slabs, similar to stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. Don't ask me why I thought this.

@ Lythberg I am so disgusted with the " Title" crap.
People rather be called a title than by their proper names.
A title is a function, gift, calling of God. It's something the Holy Spirit enables.

POSTED BY: cbuckner

Patrick, the irony is that in scripture some things were given to the priests and other people and some things were given to God. The things that were given to God were burnt up (i.e. burnt offerings) never to be used in this world again. The things given to other man were openly stated as such. There isn't this mixing of where giving something to God ACTUALLY means giving it to a man. It's that mixing that is manipulating people in their giving. It is okay for a man to ask for an offering, but he cannot claim that that offering is for God. Unfortunately, this kind of transparency doesn't lead to Bentlys and Jets, so we have the mixing of terms.

POSTED BY: Pjam

Corey,
Money is so at the forefront of churches I dont
Think it's ever going away. They tell us to give to God. How can that
be possible when the money is affording them the finer things in life.

POSTED BY: cbuckner

You are right, it is unfortunate that so many people go into ministry with their first priorities as raising personal finances for personal use, wanting to quit their jobs, and traveling the world

POSTED BY: dlythberg

Reminds me of what we talked about many times; about how the Apostles themselves were reluctant to carry such a title. Instead, they considered themselves mere slaves, or bond-servants to Christ. They suffer for us, therefore they have a right to "partake" of our harvest. As Paul says, "Who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof?" Yet, the flipside of this is that many people want the "title," but don't want the work involved.

(cont.) Pastors teach real loose personal doctrines to draw people to their church, and they allow all manners of behavior so long as the pews stay full. It's an earthly profitable doctrine that unfortunately does little to prepare people for life after death.

POSTED BY: cbuckner

Well stated my friend. It amazes me how lax believers become in areas that feel good to the flesh (as it relates to the law) while remaining so strict in other areas like Forsaking not the gathering of the brethren and the tithe. The church in many way has become a very profitable business, and like any business the laws and acceptable cultural practices seem to magically line up with what is financially beneficial.

A time of preparation. So important in fulfilling what God has in store for us. We as Christians often overlook that preparation time, thinking God wants us to do something "right NOW!" And often we fall flat on our faces, or think that "maybe God wasn't in it after all..." But God is a God of order, and preparation. We can't microwave His will.
I've heard stories of people, fresh out of bible school, he insist on what God has for them---and it may be true---but what they neglect is a timely manner, until, finally, their plans fall short, and they're ready to blame Him for their mistakes. But the mistake is theirs...and ours.

"I love how Paul equates love with an issue of maturity in the second half of this passage. Also we live in a day and time where pastors and believers are cold, hard, and unapproachable but Paul clearly states that without love all else doesn't matter. Modern believers like to give hard words of condemnation to "put us in check", but rarely show the patient, long-suffering love that Paul talks about here. I think if we focus more on love and less on putting people in their place the body of Christ would be a closer, more connected unit, and we would all be happier in one another's presence. As it stands though, so often when I go to church or try to talk to another believer, they attempt to tear me down, make me feel bad about myself, and try to make me feel inept in the presence of God. I already know I am a sinner, not worthy of salvation; but that I am also saved by God's grace, and His grace is sufficient for all my shortcomings. So in that light, since we all live there, we should be able to love one another without trying to entrap each other with the trappings of condemnation."

if you think about it most of the questions surrounding WHY God does things the way He does could be attributed to His personality. Why does God want heterosexual unions? He created things how He like

POSTED BY: dlythberg

I agree; especially about us giving little attention to the character of God. We are so self-absorbed that i think we almost acknowledge God as being emotionless---even when we are taught (repeatedly) otherwise. It is such human nature to exclude anything outside ourselves; to think that ONLY we and our finite emotions matter, that we never take into account GOD'S emotion. But indeed He is a jealous God, and we must consider that...at all times.

POSTED BY: cbuckner

I think it's so easy to neglect God because we don't see him. We are constantly faced with sin, temptation, and idols whether we want to or not. Hearing from God takes a measure of active participation. It's like, out of sight, out of mind. Like is said in scripture, when we follow God's commands it makes it easier to keep God on the mind, and in doing so we don't make god jealous.

It's odd to me how little attention people give to God's personality, and passages like this where He speaks on His jealousy. We have to keep that in mind, because nobody wants to make a person they love jealous.

Part 2 I believe all kinds of creepy people are being groomed via the Internet. Pray that we be not consumed with the New age order of our day.

People need people.

Social media has isolated millions.

It’s said the 1 in every 12th person in the World is on Facebook. It’s becoming a scary world when we don’t connect physically.

Knowledge can help you identify a problem, but it takes understanding to solve it.

Some things I know, other things I understand. For the first time in my life I think I FULLY understand Proverbs 4:7! Of course I will be blogging about this soon.

Thanks for making my editor feel welcome at Yvonne’s poetry event. It was really put together, unlike some Spoken Word things. I could tell that your wife did a lot of planning. It sure showed. You both made Elaine feel accepted, and I appreciate that. Afterward, she remarked about how nice you both were. We should consider double-dating.

I had a blast with you all on Saturday night at my wife’s Night of Spoken Word! Always a blessing to hear my brothers and sisters drop that anointed spoken word the way we all do! Great job Baby! It was a wonderful night.

i am dating (though we choose not to call it dating) a woman that is so perfect for me that it’s scary. We started out as friends, for almost two years, and all that time she was with someone else; but that, in itself, didn’t deter me. Btw, did i mention that she is my editor, so for those past two years we carried a professional writer-editor relationship. Though we met shortly after my divorce from another woman, i felt from the beginning that she was perfect for me. But i waited, and left it to the Lord. i made she I didn’t try to ´move us to another level´, or come on too strong---as is often my problem. Instead i simply waited, and prayed to best the best friend i could possibly be to her. Now she, at that time, lived with said boyfriend downtown. Though it kind of bothered me, I said nothing about it, just left in God’s hands. Yet from the beginning, she seemed very interested in me. Anyway, to make a long story short, she left her boyfriend more than a month ago, and moved in with her mom in Tinley park. I can’t help but think that this was all God’s doing---that He saw me willing to wait, and to leave it in His will. And since then she has shown an amazing vigor in trying to get close to me. We see each other at least twice a week (I live in Bourbonnais) and are always texting. This, I know, is God’s work. This beautiful young woman, and our budding relationship, is so natural and easy that i can’t imagine it being otherwise. It is truly worth it to trust in the Lord and, as proverbs says, ´lean not on thine own understanding.´ If I’d leaned on my own, I’d have given up a long time ago, or worse---messed up the whole thing. The scriptures don’t lie when it says, ´in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will give you the DESIRES OF YOUR HEART.´ I thank Him everyday for her.

Having readily admitting that I have never read through the 2 books of Chronicles though I have read the entire rest of the Bible; today I am embarking on a journey through the 2 books of the Bible most difficult for me to read.

Hello Corey,

I have an idea. Why don’t you throw a Alltogod party. I think face2face relationships/ friendships are better than social sites. It all has it’s place but we are friends with so many
